Marching Band Season Volunteering

Those who have watched the competitions and half-time shows, & experienced the positive effects gained from being a part of this group, tell us that it’s addictive!

The Marching Band season begins with a 2-week band camp prior to the beginning of the school year and runs through the end of first semester. Home football games are on Fridays August-November.  Tournaments occur on various Saturdays October-November (See the Events Calendar for details). Director Shedd, Coaches, Drum Major, Assistant Drum Majors and Section Leaders lead the band. Our role is to provide support to them.

To be a volunteer, San Diego Unified School District requires you to complete the Parent Volunteer form & its requirements each year.

Volunteers are requested 1-2 weeks ahead of an event through Remind (How to sign up for Remind updates).  Due to the size of the event, volunteers for the Falcon Invitational are recruited at the start of the season.

Below are typical Marching Band volunteer roles.  Come join the fun!

Pit Crew

These volunteers help members of the band and Front Ensemble (aka Pit) get equipment, heavier instruments, and props to the field for the halftime show at football games and competitions. These folks generally get into the competition and games for free. What a deal!

Bus Chaperones

Band students understand behavior expectations and how they are held to a higher standard. They understand that travel is a privilege that can be lost. Band students are the cream of the crop, the best of the best, and riding the bus with them, helping them get all their uniform parts together and such… is really a fun job. Stay to lend a hand with the pit crew to get into tournaments free!

Truck Drivers

The Marching Band has a lot of gear! We rent 1-2 trucks for each away tournament. Truck drivers arrange for the rentals, assist the band with loading & unloading, drive to and from the tournaments. Without their help the band couldn’t perform. Stay to lend a hand with the pit crew to get into tournaments free!

Falcon Tournament Committee

Annually, in November, we host a Marching Band Tournament at SRHS, and it is THE major fall fundraising event for the program that can involve over a dozen marching bands.  There are many elements needed to make this event successful (e.g., parking, crowd control, snack bar, first aid, and hospitality, etc.). This is the team that makes it happen!

Marching Band Uniform Coordinator(s)

All band students get sized for uniforms each year. These volunteers work with the Drum Major(s) to schedule time during MArching Band Camp to help students select uniforms and track their selection. They periodically check in with students to ensure the uniforms don’t need adjustments. At the end of the season, they organize a dry cleaning pick-up, then store uniforms upon return.
